Demonstrative pronouns III
Introduction
Demonstrative adjectives are something with which you are familiar: este/esta, ese/esa, estos/estas, esos/esas, and so on. These adjectives need to be used in conjunctions with a noun, as in "Me gustan esos zapatos." Much like possessive adjectives and pronouns, however, there are pronouns forms of the demonstratives. This allows you to say things like "This is pretty," or "I like those," without a noun. Also like possessive pronouns, demonstrative pronouns are very similar to their adjective forms.
Demonstrative pronouns
The following are the demonstrative pronouns in Spanish. Note the differences (esto, eso, aquello) as these are important.
Using these is a lot like using any pronoun:
Me gustan esos. (I like those.)
Estas son feas. (These are ugly.)
No me gusta la mayorÃa de los pasteles, pero esto es fantástico. (I don't like most cakes, but this is fantastic.)
La biblioteca no tiene eso. (The library does not have that.)
Demonstrative pronouns are used to replace nouns. They look a lot like demonstrative adjectives, but they are used differently. Instead of being used to describe nouns, they are used to replace them.
Esa chaqueta es fea, pero me gusta esta. (That jacket is ugly, but I like this one.) *Note esa is a demonstrative adjective, because it describes chaqueta, whereas esta is a demonstrative pronoun.
